Sipi Falls is located in Kapchorwa District about 275 kilometers (170 miles) northeast of Kampala, Uganda’s capital. The drive to the falls can take several hours by car depending on road conditions. It is best to travel by car in order to enjoy a scenic drive full of breathtaking sceneries. Once in the area, you will need to hike to the falls from the surrounding villages.
The trek to the falls is relatively moderate but can be challenging depending on your fitness level. There are several different routes you can take, each offering unique views of the falls. The hike usually takes about 2–3 hours depending on the route and your pace.
The trails can be a bit muddy especially during the rainy season, so be prepared for some slippery sections. Along the way, you will pass through local villages, farms and dense forests with rich biodiversity.
Sipi Falls consists of three main waterfalls: Upper Falls- the tallest and most dramatic of the three, Middle Falls- beautiful and surrounded by lush greenery and Lower Falls- a more secluded waterfall with a deep plunge pool.
The falls are absolutely stunning and offer plenty of opportunities for photography. Some visitors take a dip in the cool waters at the base of the falls though be cautious and check with local guides.
Some of the requirements you can move along with on your hiking trip to Sipi Falls include; comfortable hiking boots (the trails can be rocky and slippery), rain gear (the weather can be unpredictable, so packing a lightweight rain jacket is advisable), water and snacks (stay hydrated, especially if you plan to hike for a few hours), camera (you will want to capture the beauty of the falls and surrounding landscapes) among others.
